If you trade in a car for a cheaper one do they give you a check for the difference?

I was thinking of trading in my 03 Infiniti G35 w/ 26k miles for something cheaper.Its worth around 23-24k and I wanted to get something new around 15k and was wondering if this means the dealership would have to give me a check for the difference.
