1st Gen Tacoma or 2nd Gen?

I "traded up" to a 2nd gen 4.0 V6 6-speed TRD Off-Road 4x4. My 97 Tacoma was also V6 4x4 5-spd. The newer Tacoma models just don't feel as solid as the older ones. More power, yes, but the transmission feels clunky. The new "drive-by-wire" throttle response is computerized and jerky. Any other personal experiences going from a first gen to a second gen?
