Yeah - you're dead on. The phrase "on your door step" means they're close to where you are (in theory, your home or other homestead). And in general, abbreviations such as km. are best if followed by a period. English, in general, is a very ambiguous language, and though I can't personally think of another word that resembles "km" you never know. The period just denotes it as an abbreviation and not a real word; like Mr. or Mrs.
