How do you transfer a bulk of song that are on windows media player 11 to i tunes?

i have about 1000 songs on wmp but i recently bought an ipod and i would like to know if there is a way to get those song on i tunes. i have tried to import them and i have tried to transfer the files .. is there anything else i can do?
