Codec problems?

after using wmp 10 i kept getting error downloading codec on every film i tried to play.So i updated to wmp 11 guess what exactly the same i have tried different formats still no go.the only time i can get by is using VLC but sometimes i have to resorte to wmp.what is going on? .codger
